Since this two sentences has the same subject, we can combine this two sentences - 原句=Competitive climbing is a relatively new activity and has grown quickly in popularity.
- sentence patten: description 1 + subject + description 2
- ex:

= A third-year Ph.D. condidate, James is studying in Paris.
